4-2+4+2 = 8

Chickens that is! Of the orginal 4, 2 had to be euthenased because of the problems below (listed below that is). In June, after much thought, we acquired 4 more to replace them; two Rhode Island Reds Maran Cross, and two Bluebells - Rhode Island Reds Brahma cross.

Intregration is never easy as all the text books said, and true to form, the elderly matrons did not like the new ones. Nothing personal you understand, just "this is our place". A subtle game ensued in which each matron wanted to do exactly what one of the four were doing, at exactly the same time. "Cool" was the response of the four new ones, and they decided to do something else at which point the matrons repeated the game. Wearing to say the least, so we separated them.

July the 1st - first eggs from the new ones!

Then we visited the New Forest Show in Brockenhurst and who were waiting for us although we didn't know it? Two Speckledies - so we now have six new ones all repeating the game of the matrons and inegration starts all over again!

What happened to the eggs? What happened to the eggs?
We are chicken farmers. Well, not quite! We have four birds who are now 2 1/2 years old and they are slowly moving into matronly middle age. Unfortunately this means that the egg supply is drying up and we have the humiliating experience of queing at the farmers market for them.

Talking of Farmer's Markets, did you know that Winchester has one of the best and largest in the UK? Well worth a visit should you be in the area. It is held every other Sunday and more information can be gathered from the web site.

I spoke too soon about having four birds, we now have three. Occasionally chickens get egg peritonitis which can be fatal but is curable. White Tail, the healthy and bouncy one of them, suffered such an affliction but didn't recover. The other three have acted really strangely and are missing her. However, their overall behaviour is more tranquil than before leading us to believe that White Tail's bouncy behaviour perhaps stirred up the others to be more frenetic than otherwise they would be.

Marijke and Harriett are the faces behind the phones. Both are International travellers, with Marijke having recently returned from a round the world backpacking tour, and Harriett, who has lived in England, Ireland and America apart from her own globe trotting adventures. Both also have extensive experience in retail and customer services, so we are confident that they will look after you. And just in case you are wondering, sorry but the face is not either of the team, but why not ring us if you need to!
